At Clifton, we want our children to become confident, creative and responsible users of technology. Computing gives children opportunities to understand how technology works, develop computational thinking, create digital content and use technology safely and effectively.

From Nursery to Year 6, children develop their computing knowledge and skills progressively. We encourage children to explore, solve problems, think logically and creatively, and understand how technology can be used as a tool to support learning and communication.

Our Computing Curriculum

From Early Years to Year 6, we use the Purple Mash Computing Scheme, which provides a carefully sequenced programme of learning aligned with the National Curriculum and EYFS Framework. The curriculum develops children's knowledge and skills across Computer Science, Information Technology and Digital Literacy, with clear progression throughout the school.

Our curriculum develops three key areas:

• Computer Science – understanding how computers and digital systems work, developing algorithms and programming skills, and using logical thinking to solve problems.
• Information Technology – using digital tools to create, organise, communicate and present information in different ways.
• Digital Literacy – developing the knowledge and skills needed to use technology confidently, safely, responsibly and respectfully.

Children revisit important knowledge and skills as they progress through the school, building increasing independence and understanding over time.

Thinking Like Computer Scientists

Computing is about more than learning how to use a computer or tablet. Children are encouraged to think logically, solve problems, spot patterns, break problems into smaller steps and develop solutions.

Through programming and practical activities, children learn how instructions work and how algorithms can be used to achieve a particular outcome. They have opportunities to create, test, debug and improve their work, developing resilience and confidence when things do not work as expected.

Children also learn to use technology purposefully to create digital content, communicate ideas and solve problems. They develop an understanding of how technology is used in everyday life and the wider world.

Online Safety

Keeping children safe when using technology is an important part of our Computing curriculum. Children learn how to make safe and responsible choices online and develop the knowledge and confidence to recognise and respond to potential risks.

Using Purple Mash and its 2BeSafe online safety programme, children explore age-appropriate topics such as privacy and personal information, online relationships, respectful behaviour, misinformation, passwords and security, screen time and digital wellbeing. Learning is revisited and developed as children move through the school.

Online safety is also reinforced through PSHE, assemblies, discussions and everyday school life, helping children understand that being safe and responsible online is part of being a good digital citizen. Please click HERE for further information, tips and support for E-Safety!

Computing in Early Years

In Nursery and Reception, technology is introduced purposefully and in ways that support children's learning and development. Digital experiences sit alongside rich opportunities for play, exploration, physical activity, conversation, stories and real-world experiences.

Children may explore technology through carefully planned activities, while also developing the foundations of computational thinking through following instructions, recognising patterns, sequencing, problem-solving and exploring cause and effect.

Screen use is limited, purposeful and adult-supported, ensuring that technology complements rather than replaces the important experiences children need in the Early Years. We also begin to develop age-appropriate understanding of how to use technology safely and responsibly. This approach reflects current government guidance for screen use in early years settings.

Supporting Every Child

We want every child to become a confident and responsible digital learner. Children are given opportunities to develop their computing skills through practical activities, problem-solving, programming and creative digital projects.

Teachers use modelling, questioning, discussion, repetition and practical activities to support children's understanding. Appropriate support and challenge helps children to develop their skills from their individual starting points.

Our aim is that, by the time children leave Clifton, they have developed secure computing knowledge, confidence in using technology, computational thinking and problem-solving skills, and the understanding they need to use technology safely, creatively and responsibly as they continue their education and beyond.
